I am under no illusion that Sun Island is a true reflection of what life is like for local Maldivian people. Its a manufactured resort, groomed and built to serve the tourist. A quick look at Amnesty International and related websites shows what life is like for genuine Maldivian people living under the (alledged) fear, denial of free speech and repression of one of the worlds last dictators - His Excellency President Gayoom. To remain focused, my summary is based on how i feel about Sun Island being a holiday destination, rather than my feelings on Maldivian politics and leadership.
I had a great holiday, enjoyed every second, but Sun Island is a complex place to explain.
In my opinion, its very clean, has great views and beaches, superb food and friendly staff. The sea provides ample opportunity for activity and leisure and the facilities are basic, but well presented and clean.
Tips
Tip the staff as you see fit, but please do give them something if you feel they deserve it. These guys work long hours (typically 4 weeks on, 1 week off) for much less than UK minimum wage. A 10 dollar tip a week is less than 2 pints of beer in the UK, but is the equivalent 5% of their MONTHLY wage. It makes a big difference.
Typically, these are average tip amounts -
Room boy, waiter and barman - give them 10 bucks each when you arrive, 10 bucks a week later and you will get the kind of service you can only dream off.
Baggage porter should get 1 dollar a bag, but a 5 dollar tip for 3 bags would also be considered normal.
